The Supreme Court, on October 9, 2020, held that, it is not compulsory for the medical colleges to provide 15% quota to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). The court also states that it is all upon private medical colleges which offer professional and technical courses to decide whether they wish to provide NRI or management quotas and to what extent subject to certain limits which is et by judicial precedents, enacted law or subordinate legislation. A Bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and S Ravindra Bhat passed the judgement and noted that the provision for 15% NRI quota was not compulsory.
